Democrats ‘Roll Over and Play Dead’: The Politics of Collapse

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Drawing of the symbol of the Democrats - the donkey
This iconic donkey/jackass is much cuter than your typical elected Democrat.

When the going gets tough, the Democrats find it all so very daunting.

Right now, Democrats on Capitol Hill have to decide whether to sign up for the ‘roll over and play dead’ strategy promulgated by James Carville. Or should they sign up for ‘Fight Oligarchy’ message of Bernie Sanders?

Well that’s an easy bet to make. Since at least 2016, ‘mainstream’ Democrats have made it an article of faith (in god knows what) never to follow Bernie Sanders in anything. No matter how right he may be in the short or long term. One of Sanders’s sins of course, has been being more passionate about what’s right than about political strategy. Shame on him for being real!

Sanders does not seem to have been born with the ‘roll over and play dead’ gene. Therefore, he obviously doesn’t agree with any such strategy.

The Politics of Collapse

Carville is not now, and probably never has been, a proponent of being real a la Bernie Sanders. Carville is described as a ‘strategist’. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being around political strategists is that they are the opposite of honest.

Carville the strategist’s point is that the Trump administration is terrible at governing. They are likely to do their level best to collapse, implode, destroy themselves, and undermine everything that props them up. They may generally commit some sort of suicide – and stat.

Powerless Democrats?

His other point is that the Democrats are kind of lame, being leaderless and impotent. So playing dead is kinda right up their alley. So far as I know, he politely declined to point out that one thing Trump and Elon Musk are not lame about – is trumpeting their messages. They do this loudly and clearly, everywhere and anywhere non-fucking-stop.

Whether Carville is right about the imminent collapse of the Trump administration or not, I don’t know. But something’s bound to collapse here pretty soon. We’ve all predicted collapse or the apocalypse or dystopia for so many years now that we’ve got to see one sooner or later. My money is currently on sooner.

Carville’s argument seems to be that there’s no need to strain your passivity by actually doing something when the other party is busy writhing like a crazy person. The Trump administration, in his opinion, will accidentally roll the ball of state the Democrats’ way. By screwing everything up. If there’s a way to frustrate Americans who hate Trump any more effectively than not doing anything, no doubt some Democratic strategist will come up with it soon.

Chuck Schumer, of course, needs no one to advise him to be passive. His natural talent for passivity is rivaled only by the general tendency towards passivity of most mainstream elected Democrats. Carville admits it’s a risky strategy, and many disagree with it. But apparently, Democrats are not averse to taking risks with the health of the nation.

Democrats Didn’t Care to Stop the Apocalypse Before

After all, even Nancy Pelosi, she of the reputation as quite the fighter, has been extraordinarily busy for at least a decade doing absolutely nothing. She has done nothing to forestall the imminent collapse/dystopia everyone has been anticipating for so long. I will grant that Democrats have issued the occasional strongly worded prim warning/plea to someone or other (including themselves) about something or other. However, this has had absolutely no effect. As Carville notes, Democratic criticisms have had little noticeable effect on Trump’s fortunes.

The raw reality seems to be that not fighting back in any demonstrable way has the Democrats in exactly the same place as the rest of the country – Fuckedville. For them, though, it is the same tedious boring Fuckedville that politicians regularly inhabit. The Fuckedville of insider bickering and politicking. They’ve been undermining themselves with gleeful abandon for ever so long. This has gone on while, of course, the GOP has been undermining the entire nation.

The chances are extraordinarily high that there is something better possible for the godforsaken population that is Americans. A significant percentage of Americans don’t like the Trump administration or what it is doing. On the other hand, not all that many do like it all that much. But that something better is apparently not going to drop into American laps without a fight. Maybe even a war.

Whether there will be such a battle depends on what Americans are worried about. If it’s affordability, Americans are not likely to find themselves in a better mood soon. On the other hand, if what they are worried about is transgender people – then god help us all, including transgender people.

Democrats’ Morality?

Americans are clearly not worried (enough) about losing their constitution. Meanwhile, Republicans are clearly not worried enough about anything except getting on Trump’s bad side. Maybe Musk and the hardship he is so clearly relishing inflicting on everyone who is not him will convince Americans to rouse themselves. Something Democrats are apparently morally opposed to doing.

In my opinion, Democrats if they are to survive, they need a whole goddamn fucking less strategy and a whole lot more straight talk, passion, moral courage, and general conejos.

In short, they need to get pretty fed up.
